Keine blauweisse Scilla, ähnelt aber. Dies ist die einzige Zwiebelpflanze, die sich bei mir nicht vermehrt, weder durch Teilung noch durch Samen, es sind zwei und es bleiben zwei. … Not a blue and white Scilla, but similar looking. It is the only bulbous plant in my garden that doesn’t multiply, neither by seeds nor by partition; they are two and they remain two. Diesen kleinen Baum bekam ich von einer Nachbarin. Ich habe meine Maispflanzen umgetopft, denn die kamen schon mit den dicken Wurzeln durch die Löcher am Boden der Töpfe. Ich habe die neuen gleich etwas grösser gewählt, denn ich will die vor dem Auspflanzen nicht noch einmal umziehen müssen. So viel Umstand für etwas Mais, aber wir lieben den frisch von der Pflanze.

For the new ones I choose them bigger right away (the pots), as I don’t want to have to do it once again before planting them out (the plants). 😉 A lot of effort for a tiny bit of maize/corn, but we love the cobs fresh from the plant.

Zwei Tage später: 21 Maissamen von 23 gekeimt. Und die Pflanzen wachsen beim Zugucken. Die letzten beiden keimen vielleicht nicht mehr, aber 21 von 23 ist doch ein gutes Ergebnis. Ich habe auf der Südseite schon mal geschaut, wo ich sie hinpflanzen werde; in unserem Klima gegen Ende Mai.

Ich habe auch noch Salat, Wurzeln und Petersilie gesät. Wenn das alles so gut kommt wie letztes Jahr, bekommen wir eine Menge schönes Gemüse.

Und das ist der Rest unseres ersten und kleinsten Maiskolbens. Die etwa 10 Körner wollten wir eigentlich zur Aussaat nächstes Jahr verwenden, aber eine kleine Maus konnte sie gut als Futter gebrauchen, als sie nicht wieder aus unserem Wirtschaftsraum herausfand.

Aber dann war ich am Unkrautjäten und zog eine Pflanze heraus an deren Ende sich eine kleine rote Rübe befand. Ich muss gestehen, dass ich sie sofort gegessen habe. Aber, im Südbeet stehen eine ganze Menge davon, und zwar kleine R¨übchen und auch die runden, die wir in Hamburg Karotten nennen (ob das wohl von dem russischen „karotki“ kommt, was „kurz“ bedeutet). Ich habe nur ein paar herausgezogen, weil die ja noch so klein sind (und sie natürlich gleich gegessen; sie waren alle schmackhaft und süss).
But when I was weeding, I pulled up a plant on the lower end of which was a little carrot. I must admit that I ate it right away. But, in the southern flowerbed we have a lot of them, both the longer ones and the round ones. I only pulled up a few, because they are still very small (and ate them immediately, of course; they were all tasty and sweet).
Hier das Beet. Alle Pflanzen mit den zarten, fiedrigen Blättern sind Rüben. Das ganze Beet ist voll davon. Wie toll ist das denn? 🙂

Wie sie in meinen Garten gekommen sind, weiss ich nicht. Vielleicht waren die Samen im Vogelfutter??? Wie viel Zeit sie noch zum Wachsen haben, weiss ich auch nicht, denn wir hatten bereits den ersten Nachtfrost. Jedenfalls war das eine schone Überraschung.

Ziertabak: der Helle ist nicht weiss, sondern cremefarben mit hellgelben Blattspitzen. Ich habe auch noch einen Schneeweissen im Topf. Das war eine Samenmischung, aus der ich 6 verschiedene Farben bekommen habe. Ich mag diese Sternenblüten und den tollen Duft am Abend. … Flowering tobacco: the light one is not white, but cream coloured with light yellow petal tips. I do have a snow white one in a pot though. They came from a seed blend, from which I got 6 different colours. I like the star shaped flowers and the wonderful perfume in the evening. Dieses Allium sieht aus wie ein kleines Feuerwerk. Es gibt sie auch in weiss und rosa, was dann den Eindruck noch verstärkt. … This allium looks like small fireworks. They also exist in white and pink, which underlines that impression even more. Diese Lilie hat sich bei mir ausgesäht, ich habe sie jedenfalls nicht gepflanzt. Höchstwahrscheinlich ist es eine Lillium speciosum rubrum, die Lieblingslilie meines Vaters. … This lily has sowed itself in my garden. I did not plant it in any case. Schmuckkörbchen: Alle aus einer Samentüte, wo das Bild von der rechts unten drauf war. Aber ich beklage mich nicht, sie sind alle schön! 🙂 … Cosmos: All from one bag of seeds, on which the picture of the one to the right, down, was to be seen. But I don’t complain, they are all beautiful! 🙂 Unser eigener Mais. Nicht alle Körner waren entwickelt, aber die Menge entsprach doch einer kleinen Dose. Und er war so lecker und süss! … Our own maize/corn. Not all grains are developed, but the quantity still equalled that of a small tin. And it was so delicious and sweet!
Gartenbewohner … Tenants in the garden
Ist sie nicht wunderschön? … Is it not beautiful? Hier hat sich eine kleine Ackerhummel (etwas unscharf) unter einem Himbeerblatt für die Nacht eingerichtet. Diese Dame scheint der Ansicht zu sein, dass sämtliche Himbeerbüsche ihr gehören und umsummt mich, wenn ich es wage, welche von ihren Beeren zu ernten. 😀 … A small field bumblebee (a bit blurry) has snuggled under a raspberry leaf for the night. This lady seems to believe that all the raspberry bushes are hers, and she buzzes around me, when I dare to harvest some of her fruits. 😀
Hummeln habt ihr ansonsten ja schon reichlich gesehen und auch Schmetterlinge. Bei uns kommen die kleinen Füchse zuerst, dann die Kohlweisslinge, danach Tagpfauenauge, Zitronenfalter und die kleinen Bläulinge und etwas später dann die Admirale. Oh, und ich habe einen einzelnen gesichtet, der ein Perlmutterfalter gewesen sein könnte. Dieses Jahr hatten wir aber auch eine Menge von diesen hier:

Und die neuesten Raupen (auf meiner Rose „The Lady of Megginch“). Erst dachte ich, dass es die gleichen wären, wie letztes Jahr, die mit dem Horn, aber es sind andere. Auf der Webseite „Schmetterlinge und Raupen“ von Walter Schön habe ich sie gefunden: es handelt sich um einen Nachtfalter, der Mondvogel heisst, wie toll ist das denn. Das Bild von dem Falter stammt von Walters Webseite (er ist jetzt auch auf Instagram vertreten, und ihr findet ihn unter Suche: butterflies4all). Er (der Falter) sieht aus wie ein Stückchen Holz mit einer Schnittstelle. Was es nicht alles gibt.
… And the latest caterpillars (on my rose „The Lady of Megginch“). First I thought that they were the same as last year, the one with a horn, but they are different. On the website „Schmetterlinge und Raupen“ (butterflies and caterpillars) by Walter Schön I have found them: a night moth called buff-tip. The photo of the moth is from Walter’s website (the website is in German, but Walter mentions the English names of the butterflies. You can also find him on Instagram now under search: butterflies4all). The moth looks like a small piece of wood with a cut edge. Amazing what one can find.
Und hier ein Prachtstück von Spinne, die ihr Netz zwischen Sonnenschirm und Strandkorb gesponnen hat. Wir haben nicht sehr oft dort gesessen in diesem Jahr, zum grössten Teil wegen kleiner, irritierender Insekten. Nächstes Jahr werden wir einen Platz im Garten für ihn suchen, vielleicht ist es dort besser. Unter den Terrassen ist es ja immer irgendwie feucht. Ich musste die Aufnahme mit meiner konventionellen Canon machen, weil mein Handy die Spinne einfach nicht scharf stellen wollte.
… And here a real gem of a spider, that spun its net between parasol and beach chair. We have not been sitting there very often this year, mainly because of small, irritating insects. Next year we will find a place in the garden for it, maybe it will be better there. Under the terraces it is always a bit humid. I had to take the photo with my conventional Canon, because my mobile phone refused to focus on the spider.
Auf Wiedersehen sage ich mit einem Foto von einer schottischen Rose (nehme ich an, ich habe einen Ableger aus einem meiner früheren Gärten „mitgehen“ lassen, ich weiss also nicht, was es für eine ist). Ich wünsche euch noch einen schönen Tag!

Schon damals musste ich ihn von der Seite fotografieren, weil sein rechtes Geweih bereits abgebrochen war. Vor ca. zwei Wochen fuhren wir vorbei und sahen, dass das zweite Geweih auch verschwunden war. Aus dem Hirsch war eine Hirschkuh geworden. Ich habe dann schnell ein paar Fotos gemacht für die Nachwelt. 😉 Vorgestern fuhren wir vorbei, und die Hirschkuh hatte kein Gesicht mehr. Da der ganze Baum sehr morsch aussieht, wird man ihn wohl demnächst fällen.

Meine Sommerfutterstellen für die Vögel: Im Süden haben wir drei Baumstämme und dann steue ich unter zweien der Büsche für die Bodenesser. Im Moment hänge ich noch Meisenkugeln auf. Im Gras verstreue ich Hafer und Sonnenblumenkerne für die Grossen und am Küchenfenster sind jetzt nur noch kleingehackte Erdnüsse für die Meisen.

Dieses Jahr wollte ich endlich mal ein Milpa-Beet** anlegen, auch 3 sisters genannt (es gibt auch 5 und 7 sisters, Pflanzen die zusammengepflanzt werden und sich gegenseitig unterstützen und beschützen, wenn euch das interessiert, gibt es dazu Videos auf YouTube). Den Mais dafür habe ich mit jeweils zwei Samen im Haus vorgesät, denn auf eine gleichmässige Bodentemperatur draussen von 15 Grad Celsius kann ich lange warten. Es keimte jedoch nur eine Pflanze, von der ich nicht einmal weiss, ob es eine Maispflanze ist. Weiss das jemand von euch? An dem Mais sollen sich Bohnen hochranken und an die Basis gehört eigentlich Kürbis. Da den ausser mir niemand isst, plane ich, stattdessen verschiedene Paprika zu säen. Und dann sind da noch ein paar Blüher hinzugekommen: Meine schöne Christrose, die ich letztes Mal schmählich vergessen habe, blaue und rosa anemona blanda, Mini-Narzissen, Perlhyazinthen, Forsythia und Zierjohannisbeere, Primeln und die kleinen Narzissen, die ihre Blüten immer nach Norden drehen (ich muss die wirklich in das Beet auf der linken Seite pflanzen, damit man die Blüten besser sehen kann) und ein paar kleine Tulpen mehr. Dann die beiden kleinen zweifarbigen, die wie Scilla aussehen, aber keine sind. Die haben sich leider nicht vermehrt, dafür haben einige der Primeln sich fleissig ausgesät.

It (the tulip, not the camera) is not bigger than my index finger, the only survivor of ten. I have tried several times more, but the camera staunchly refuses to bring the flower into sharper focus. Das war es dann auch schon wieder. Wir haben am letzten Samstag einen Ausflug mit unserem Neffen zu einer historischen Stätte gemacht, aber davon berichte ich in anderes Mal.
