… This concerns all of Europe, therefore I also post in English. The English version follows after the German in one block. I am sure that your countries have similar organizations, to which one can connect or wavering parties that need to be contacted and held to their promises.
Klima- und Energiekrise, Hungersnöte und ein Krieg in Europa: Unsere Gesellschaft steht vor enormen Herausforderungen. Wir leben in Zeiten, in denen demokratisch gewählte Regierungen mutige und auch harte Entscheidungen treffen müssen – unbeeinflusst von Konzern- und Lobbyinteressen und nicht eingeschränkt durch die Gefahr, vor intransparente Schiedsgerichte gezerrt zu werden.
Genau diese Gefahr droht uns mit der Ratifizierung des europäisch-kanadischen Freihandelsabkommens CETA: Eine Paralleljustiz, die von Konzernen ausgenutzt werden kann und demokratisch gewählte Regierungen lähmt. Insbesondere die Grünen haben sich in der Opposition vehement gegen die Ratifizierung des Abkommens ausgesprochen. Doch jetzt soll das Abkommen im Eilverfahren vom Bundestag ratifiziert werden – mit den Stimmen der Grünen. Bis zur Abstimmung bleiben uns wenige Wochen. Noch können wir die Abgeordneten davon überzeugen, gegen CETA zu stimmen.
Als wir 2015 und 2016 zu Hunderttausenden gegen TTIP und CETA auf die Straßen gingen, sind die Grünen immer ganz vorne dabei gewesen. Sie schrieben auf ihre Transparente: “Demokratie ist nicht verhandelbar!” – Doch gerade das haben sie jetzt vor.
Mit einer Interpretationserklärung zum Investitionsschutzkapitel wollen sie sämtliche Bedenken gegen CETA ausräumen. Dabei droht nach wie vor die Etablierung einer gefährlichen Paralleljustiz und mit ihr ein sogenannter „regulatory chill“ – ein Regulierungsstillstand. Denn allein die Androhung von Klagen vor diesen nichtstaatlichen Schiedsgerichten führt oft dazu, dass Regierungen erst gar keine Gesetze zum Wohle der Menschen erlassen, wenn sie den Gewinn ausländischer Investoren gefährden könnten.
Die Folgen der Etablierung dieser Paralleljustiz wiegen zu schwer, um die Bedenken mit einem Kompromisspapier auszuräumen, das zudem mit hoher Wahrscheinlichkeit weiter verwässert wird! Erinnern Sie jetzt die Grünen daran, dass Demokratie nicht verhandelbar ist und sie die Ratifizierung von CETA stoppen müssen!

Climate and energy crisis, famine and a war in Europe: Our society is facing enormous challenges. We live in times in which democratically elected governments have to make courageous and tough decisions – uninfluenced by corporate and lobby interests and not restricted by the danger of being dragged before dubious tribunals.
It is precisely this danger that threatens us with the ratification of the European-Canadian free trade agreement CETA: parallel justice that can be exploited by corporations and paralyzes democratically elected governments. The Green Party in particular has vehemently opposed the ratification of the agreement as an opposition party. But now the agreement is to be ratified by the Bundestag in an urgent procedure – with the votes of the Green Party. We have a few weeks until the vote. We can still convince MEPs to vote against CETA.
When hundreds of thousands of us took to the streets against TTIP and CETA in 2015 and 2016, the Green Party was always at the forefront. They wrote on their banners: „Democracy is non-negotiable!“ – But that’s exactly what they intend to do now.
With a declaration of interpretation of the investment protection chapter, they want to dispel all concerns about CETA. There is still a risk of the establishment of a dangerous parallel justice system and with it a so-called „regulatory chill“ – a regulatory standstill. Because the mere threat of lawsuits before these non-state arbitral tribunals often means that governments do not even enact laws for the benefit of the people if they could jeopardize the profits of foreign investors.
The consequences of establishing this parallel system of justice weigh too heavily to dispel the concerns with a compromise paper, which is also very likely to be further watered down! Now remind the Green Party that democracy is non-negotiable and they must stop ratifying CETA!
