Mittsommer 2022 … Midsummer 2022

Das Mittsommernachtsfest am 23. Juni (Sankt Hans Aften auf Dänisch) war sehr nett und unsere Musik wurde sehr gut entgegengenommen. Wir haben sogar gestern noch von einem Nachbarn gehört, dass man ihm erzählt hätte, wie schön die Musik war (er musste früh nach Hause gehen wegen seiner kranken Frau). Eine Dame kam extra in unseren Garten, weil sie mich erspäht hatte, nur um mir dasselbe zu erzählen. Das hört man doch gerne. Ein kurzes Video kann man auf Facebook ansehen. Unser eigenes Video ist klangmässig fein, aber bildmässig etwas „gewellt“, denn ich hatte unser Handy auf den Basslautsprecher gestellt. Manche Stellen sind gewellter als andere. 😉 Das Video ist eine Stunde lang, mit 15 Musikstücken, aber ihr konnt ja „hoppen“. Die Liste ist ziemlich gemischt. Ich stelle hier einen Link zum Video rein, der drei Monate lang zur Verfügung steht.

The midsummer night celebration on June 23rd (Sankt Hans Aften in Danish) was very nice and our music was very well received. Even yesterday we heard from a neighbor that he was told how beautiful the music was (he had to leave early because of his sick wife). A lady came into our garden because she had spotted me, just to tell me the same thing. One likes to hear that. A short video can be viewed on Facebook. The sound of our own video is fine, but the visuals are a bit „wavy“ because I placed our mobile phone on the bass speaker. Some parts are more wavy than others. 😉 The video is an hour long, with 15 pieces of music, but you could „hop“. The repertoire is pretty mixed. I’m putting a link to the video here, which will be available for three months.

Eines haben wir herausgefunden: Unsere Anlage ist zu schwer und zu kompliziert aufzubauen. Etwas Modernes, Leichteres muss her. Wir haben natürlich schon etwas gefunden und werden die alte Anlage verkaufen. Was jetzt aus vier Teilen besteht, schrumpft damit zu nur einem Teil. Wir haben uns schnell entschlossen, denn vom Altersheim im Nachbardorf hat man uns bereits angesprochen f¨ür eine oder mehrere Vorstellungen, gratis natürlich. Auch wird es dann einfacher, die Musikgeräte mit nach Kopenhagen zu unseren Freunden zu nehmen.

… One thing we found out: Our system is too heavy and too complicated to set up. Something modern and lighter is needed. Of course, we have already found something and will sell the old system. What now consists of four parts shrinks to one part only. We made our decision quickly, because the retirement home in the neighbouring village has already approached us for one or more performances, free of charge, of course. It will also be easier to take the music system along to our friends in Copenhagen.


Die Essenausgabe mussten wir aufgeben. Wir schaffen das einfach physisch nicht. Das sind zwischen 10-12 Kartons mit 30-50 Kilo, die wir auch selber packen, ohne Packtische, also immer über den Boden gebeugt. Das Beugen kann mein Mann nicht, und das Schleppen kann ich nicht. Dazu kommt, dass ein paar der Empfänger Hilfe beim Rauftragen in die Wohnung brauchen, und das können wir wirklich nicht mehr, da müssen junge Leute her. Aber wenn wir gratis für ältere Leute Musik spielen, ist das ja auch eine Art Dienst am Nächsten, denke ich.

… We had to give up the food distribution. We just can’t do it physically. There are between 10-12 boxes with 30-50 kilos each, which we also pack ourselves, without packing tables, so always bent over down to the ground. My husband can’t do the bending, and I can’t do the carrying. In addition, a few of the recipients need help carrying them up to the apartment, and we really can’t do that anymore, young people have to help. But if we play music for older people for free, that’s a kind of service to others as well, I think.

Seit einigen Monaten machen wir zweimal in der Woche Muskeltraining in einem Fitnesscenter, gratis für uns als Rentner, denn es befindet sich in einer Art kommunalen Altentagesstätte in Aalborg. Kräfte- und gichtmässig hat mir das schon sehr geholfen.

… Since March, we are going to a fitness centre twice a week to do muscle training. It is free of charge for retirees, as it is integrated in a kind of municipal retiree club facilities in Aalborg. It has helped me a lot to gain strength and reduce my arthrosis problems.

Selbst so etwas haben sie dort. Ich habe allerdings bisher nur zwei der älteren Herren an diesem Gerät trainieren sehen.
… Also something like this they have there, but until now I have only seen two of the elderly gentlemen working out on it.
Hier das Cafe mit reichlich Sitzgelegenheiten. Dort trifft man sich zum Plausch oder zu Projektgruppen. Man organisiert auch gemeinsame Ausflüge. Das ist wie ein Haus der Jugend, nur eben für Rentner.
… The the cafe with sufficient seating. People meet there just to chat or for project groups. Also excursions are being organized. It is like a club house, just for retirees.

Das Wetter war merkwürdig bis zum Mittsommernachtsfest, kalt, bewölkt, aber trocken. Seitdem haben wir sowas wie Sommer. Einen Tag hat es durchgeregnet, was wir auch dringend brauchten. Das Klima verändert sich eben, auch wenn viele das immer noch abstreiten. Da wir ja kein Kontinentalklima haben, was im Vornherein recht extrem in seinen Ausschlägen ist, macht es sich bei uns noch nicht allzu heftig bemerkbar. Aber wir bemerken spät einsetzende Fröste, mit Nachtfrösten bis in den Mai hinein, trockene Frühlinge (März-Mai, wobei der April bei uns schon immer recht trocken war), und danach ist es dann offen, ob es trocken bleibt oder durchregnet im Sommer. All das ist natürlich gar nichts gegen die Brände, Erdrutsche, Erdbeben, Windhosen und Überschwemmungen in anderen Teilen der Welt. Das einzige Jahr, in dem wir mal Brände hatten war 2018.

… The weather was strange until Midsummer Eve festival, cold, cloudy, but dry. Since then, we’ve had something like summer. It rained one day, which we urgently needed. The climate is changing, even if many still deny it. Since we don’t have a continental climate, which is quite extreme to begin with, it doesn’t make itself felt too strongly here yet. But we notice late onsetting frosts, with night frosts well into May (that’s very new), dry springs (March-May, although April has always been quite dry here), and after that it is open whether it will remain dry or rain throughout the summer. All of this is, of course, nothing compared to the wildfires, landslides, earthquakes, tornadoes and floods in other parts of the world. The only year we ever had wildfires was 2018.

Schlagzeilen (25) Musik … Headlines (25) music

Ich habe euch noch gar nicht erzählt, dass wir jetzt auch einen Bassisten haben oder habe ich? Das war der, der bei uns in der Nähe wohnt. Auch ein netter Oldie (72). Ich bin das Küken in der Gruppe mit nur 64 Jahren (noch bis Januar).

… I haven’t told you yet that we found a bass player or did I? It was the one who lives near our place. Also a nice oldie (72). I am the fledgling of the group with only 64 years (until January).

Wir haben bisher viermal zusammen gespielt. Jedes Mal ist eine Verbesserung zu verzeichnen, aber von öffentlichen Auftritten sind wir weit entfernt. Das hat meinen Mann dazu veranlasst, unsere Duo-Aktivitäten zu perfektionieren. Wir sind jetzt dabei, den Akkordteil aller unserer Lieder auf USB-stick zu spielen, damit wir bei Auftritten eine solide Grundlage haben, falls ich blackout bekomme (ich bin nicht so begeistert von öffentlichen Auftritten) … 😉  😀 … ich spiele dann live all die Schnörkel und vielleicht stellenweise, wo es angebracht ist, dieselben Akkorde mit noch mehr Instrumenten dazu (Streicher oder Trompete oder was da so passt, z. B. Pan-Flöte bei „Mighty Quinn“).

… We have played four times together now. Each time there is improvement to notice, but we are far away from public entertainment. That has stimulated my husband to perfect our duo activities. We have started to record the keyboard parts of our songs on a USB, so that we have a solid base for our gigs, in case I have a blackout (I am not so enthusiastic about playing in public) … 😉 😀 … I will play all the embellishments live and maybe in parts, wherever appropriate, the same chords with more instruments (violins, trumpets, whatever is suitable, like for example the pan flute in „Mighty Quinn“).

Das ist unsere bisherige playlist (als Duo). Mein Mann und ich spielen jetzt seit fast zwei Jahren zusammen. Es begann für mich alles mit dem „Folsom prison blues“ mit drei Akkorden (den wir dann wieder abgewählt haben wegen des makaberen Textes), dann kam „Halleluja“, wo doch tatsächlich manchmal zwei Akkorde in EINEM Takt waren … 😉 … und jetzt spielen wir schnelle und/oder komplizierte Sachen. Da hat sich wirklich viel getan, wenn man so zurückblickt. Mein Mann hat ja immer Musik gemacht. Als junger Mann spielte er Gitarre und hatte auch zeitweise eine Band. Später, als wir uns kennenlernten, spielte er Keyboard, dann Klavier und jetzt wieder Gitarre. Ich habe in meiner Jugend Blockflöte und Akkordeon gelernt, und Letzteres seit meinem 18. Lebensjahr nicht mehr gespielt. 

… This is our playlist as a duo so far. My husband and I are playing together for almost two years now. For me it all started with the „Folsom prison blues“ with three chords (which we ditched again because of the grim text), then came „Halleluja“, where there happened to sometimes occur two chords in ONE bar… 😉 … and now we are playing fast and/or complicated stuff. A lot has happened since December 2017. My husband has always played music. When young, he played the guitar and had a band for a while. Later, when we met, he played keyboard, then piano and now guitar again. In my youth I have learned to play the recorder and the accordion. The latter I had not played since I was 18 years of age.

„Brand new Cadillac“ haben wir noch gar nicht gespielt, aber das ist nicht so schwer.

… We haven’t played „Brand new Cadillac“ yet, but that is not so difficult.

An „Strangers in the night“ knabbere ich noch herum, denn das sind richtig schwere Akkorde.

… „Strangers in the night“ is a real challenge though, the chords are rather demanding.

Mein Mann sagt, dass viele der weniger bekannten professionellen Musiker, die auf Marktplätzen und in Kneipen spielen, auf dem Keyboard immer C-Akkorde spielen, und dann transponieren sie einfach auf dem Keyboard in die richtige Tonart. Das will ich nicht, denn dann lerne ich nie alle die verschiedenen Akkorde. Das hält sowohl meine Finger als auch meine Gehirnzellen beweglich. 😉 Unsere Bluesstücke und die von den Beatles sind auch anspruchsvoll, was Akkorde angeht, aber „Strangers in the night“ ist für mich bisher die grösste Herausforderung. Ich habe sie so weit ganz gut „im Griff“, nur an dem transponierten Teil am Ende hapert es noch etwas.

… My husband says that a lot of the not so known professional musicians, who play on markets and in pubs, play their keyboard always in C chords, and then just transpose on the keyboard into the correct key. I don’t want to do that, because then I will never learn to play all the different chords. That keeps my fingers and my brain cells flexible. 😉 Our blues music and the Beatles‘ songs are also on a higher level as far as chords are concerned, but „Strangers in the night“ so far beats them all. I do have the chords „in hand“ so far, only the ones in the transposed part at the end still elude me somewhat.

Wie ihr sehen könnt, füllt Musik viel im Moment.

… As you can see, music fills a lot of our time at the moment.

Im Garten muss ich noch ein wenig aufräumen, zwei Büsche umsetzen, und dann kann der Winter kommen. Ich hoffe, dass meine kleinen Chrysanthemen noch eine Chance zum Blühen bekommen und meine wilde Aster, die sehr spät blüht (weiss) und manchmal vom Frost überholt wird. Fotos vom Oktobergarten kommen in einem separaten Beitrag, da ist noch so Einiges passiert.

… I still have to tidy up in the garden a bit, move two shrubs, and then winter may come. I hope that my small chrysanthemums will be granted a chance to flower, as well as my wild asters, which flowers very late (white) and are sometimes overtaken by frost. I will show photos of the garden in October in a separate post; there has been development.

Wir sind eine Band!                    … We are a band!

Seit letztem Donnerstag haben wir einen Bassisten. Das klingt alles ganz anders mit Schlagzeug und Bassist. Gestern haben wir zum zweiten Mal zusammen geübt, und dafür, dass wir uns alle nicht kennen, teilweise die Lieder nicht kennen und eben erst zum zweiten Mal zusammen spielen, lief es richtig gut. Und Humor ist angesagt, was auch sehr angenehm ist.

… Since last Thursday we have a bass player. It does sound somewhat different with drums and a bass. Yesterday we met for the second time to rehearse, and, in view of the fact that we don’t really know each other yet, partly don’t know the songs and – as said – only play for the second time together, it went really well. And there is a lot of humour going around, which also is quite pleasant.

Juhuuuh!                                … Yay!

Oder: das Abenteuer, eine Band zusammenzustellen.

… Or: the adventure of putting a band together.

Ja, wir sind wieder dabei, Bandmitglieder zu suchen. Die positiven Reaktionen auf Youtube und Facebook haben meinem Mann den Anstoss dazu gegeben, es doch noch einmal zu versuchen.

… Yes, we have started to look for band members again. The positive reactions on Youtube and Facebook have stimulated my husband to try it once more.

Wir haben einen sehr netten Schlagzeuger gefunden und suchen jetzt einen Bassisten und einen zweiten Gitarristen. Letzterer sollte gerne auch singen können, sonst brauchen wir auch einen Sänger (Emily Star, willst du nicht nach Dänemark ziehen???  😉  🙂 ). Das dürfen natürlich auch gerne alles Frauen sein … 😉

… We found a very nice drummer and are now looking for a bass guitar player and a second guitarist. It would be great, if the letter could sing, otherwise we would also need a singer (Emily Star, don’t you want to move to Denmark???  😉  🙂  ). All those could, of course, also be women … 😉

Wir hatten ein Gespräch mit einem Sänger und Gitarristen, der von seiner Webseite her völlig normal wirkte und anscheinend auch eine gute Stimme hatte. Das erste Zeichen, dass wohl etwas nicht so ganz in Ordnung war, war, dass er uns anrief und auf dem Wege in eine völlig andere Richtung war als die unsere. Dirigieren über Telefon erwies sich als schwierig, weil er nicht stehenblieb und wenn wir auf der Karte seinen Standort gefunden hatten, war er schon ganz woanders. Das gaben wir dann auf, und er kam dann irgendwann bei uns an.

… We had a meeting with a singer and guitarist, who made a completely normal impression on his website and seemed to have a good voice. The first sign that all might not be entirely well was, that he called us and was on his way into a completely wrong direction. Guiding him over the phone proved difficult, because he didn’t stop for a moment. When we had found his location on the map, he was already somewhere else. We gave that up and he arrived at the end (at our place).

Als erstes griff er sich im Musikraum die eine Gitarre meines Mannes, ohne zu fragen, und begann an den Dingern zum Stimmen herumzudrehen, völlig planlos und verwirrt. Mindestens ADHS, und seine Pupillen waren ziemlich gross. Wir tippten auf Medikamente, denn man wird nicht ohne Grund Frührentner.

… The first thing he did was to grab one of my husband’s guitars – without asking – and starting to turn these knobs for tuning, completely confused and aimlessly. He had at least ADHD, and his pupils were very dilated. We guessed that he was on medication; one does not become invalidity pensioner without a reason.

Wir wollten ja eigentlich um seine und unsere Pläne und Musikgeschmack und andere Erwartungen sprechen. Da kamen wir aber nicht zu. Er erzählte ausschliesslich von sich selbst und dass er selber eine Band gründen will, dort wo er wohnt, und dass er ein Musikstudio hätte und was er sich alles für teure Sachen angeschafft hat. Auf das, was wir mit unserer Band vorhatten, ging er nicht ein. Und dann wollte er, dass mein Mann „für ihn“ Gitarre spielt, also als ob mein Mann bei ihm zu einer Audition wäre. Mein Mann wies ihn darauf hin, dass er sich die Videos anschauen könnte, wenn er wissen wollte, wie er spielte. Song-and-guitar-man ging darauf gar nicht ein und bestand darauf, dass er hier und jetzt Gitarrespiel hören wollte. Da riss beim Cozy Gentleman (mein Mann) der Faden und Song-and-guitar-man bekam Bescheid, dass er das nicht erleben würde. Der stand auf, nahm seinen eigenen Gitarrenkasten und ging davon unter lauter Klage, dass wir seine Zeit verschwendet hätten, warum sollte er herkommen, wenn wir nicht für ihn spielen wollten etc.

… We actually wanted to talk about our mutual plans and music tastes and other expectations, but we didn’t get a chance. He talked exclusively about himself and that he wanted to form a band at his own town, and that he had a music studio at home, and all the expensive stuff that he had bought. He did not respond to our plans with our band. And then he requested that my husband should play the guitar „for him“, as if my husband was auditioning for him. My husband pointed him towards our videos, if he wanted to know how he was playing. Song-and-guitar-man did not respond to that at all and insisted to hear guitar playing here and now. At that, the cozy Gentleman (my husband) lost his patience and told Song-and-guitar-man that he would not experience that. The latter took his own guitar case and left, loudly complaining that we had wasted his time, and why should he come down here, if we didn’t want to play for him.

Wir hoffen nur, dass er den Weg nach Hause gefunden hat.

… We just hope that he found his way home.

Dann verabredeten wir uns mit einem anderen Bassisten, der unter falschem Namen auftrat, weil er bereits in einer anderen Band spielte. Mit denen lief es seiner Aussage nach nicht so gut, und wir nehmen an, dass er nicht wollte, dass die anderen Bandmitglieder seine Bandsuche mitbekamen. Wie in einer schlechten Ehe, in der man sich erst scheiden lässt, wenn man was Neues gefunden hat. Das fand ich schon immer merkwürdig … naja, er meldete sich am Trefftag krank und will nach Gesundung wieder Kontakt aufnehmen. Wir werden sehen.

… Then we made an arrangement with another bass player, who had given us a wrong name, because he already was playing in another band. Allegedly, it was not going so well with them, and we were guessing that he didn’t want the other band members to know that he was out searching again. Like in a bad marriage, where one first wants a divorce when one has found somebody else. I have always found that strange … well, on the planned day he „called in sick“ and wants to contact us again after his recovery. We will see.

In dieser Woche sind wir mit noch einem Bassisten verabredet, der ganz in der Nähe von uns wohnt.

… This week we will meet (hopefully) with another bass player, who lives nearby.

Inzwischen hat der Drummer sein Jazz-Set bei uns aufgestellt (er hat noch ein anderes zuhause) und wir haben zwei Musikstücke anprobiert, „Pianomand“ und „Still got the blues“. Das ging richtig gut, dafür dass wir zum ersten Mal zusammen spielten. Ein gutes Omen!

… In the meantime, the drummer has put up his jazz-set at our place (he has another one at home), and we have tentatively tried two songs, „Pianomand“ and „Still got the blues“. For the very first time playing together, it did not go bad at all. A good omen!

Allerdings, das Schlimmste, was passieren kann ist, dass wir wieder als Duo enden … 😉
