Camping an der Elbe … Camping at the river Elbe

Ich beginne einfach einmal mit dem Campingplatz und der Stimmung dort. Ich habe unter Anderem eine Unmenge an Sonnenuntergangsfotos gemacht. Wir befanden uns südlich von Hamburg, ganz nahe bei Geesthacht.

… I will start with showing the camping site and the atmosphere there. Among others, I have taken numerous photos of sunsets over the river. We were in the south of Hamburg, very near a town called Geesthacht.

Das Besondere an diesem Campingplatz ist, dass der Teil auf der Flussseite des Deichs ein Naturcampingplatz ist, also ohne markierte Plätze, und es gibt viele grosse Bäume, weil die Besitzer Vogelliebhaber sind und überall Brutkästen angebracht haben. Sie haben sogar ein Schwalbenhotel entworfen und bauen lassen, das an der Rezeption steht, auf der sicheren Seite des Deichs. Dort befinden sich auch die Servicegebäude und der zweite Teil des Platzes, den sie den „Garten“ nennen. Unsere Freunde, die wir dort getroffen haben, hatten uns den Platz schon einmal gezeigt, als wir vor vielen Jahren zusammen campen wollten. Damals konnten wir allerdings nicht dort bleiben, weil für den nächsten Tag Hochwasser angesagt wurde, und alle Camper auf die andere Seite des Deiches verholen mussten. Wir wichen daher auf Ratzeburg aus, was dann auch sehr schön war.

… The specialty of this camping site is, that the part on the river side of the dike is a natural site, meaning without specified plots, and there are many large trees, because the owners are bird lovers and have installed nesting boxes everywhere. They have even designed a swallow hotel and had it made for them, which is standing at the reception building on the safe side of the dike. There are also the service buildings and the second part of the camping site, which they call „the garden“. Our friends, with whom we met there, had already shown this place to us many years ago at another stage when we planned to camp together. But at that time we could not stay there, as for the next day a flooding was expected, and all campers had to move to the other side of the dike. We stayed in a place called Ratzeburg then, which also was a great location.

Was mich immer wieder erstaunt ist, dass so weit flussauf (ca. 160 km bis zur Nordsee) sich immer noch die Gezeiten bemerkbar machen, und das nicht nur einige Zentimeter. Erst bei Geesthacht wird das unterbrochen, wo sich die erste Schleuse befindet.

… What keeps surprising me is that so far up a river (about 160 km (99 miles) from the North Atlantic), the tides are still making an impact on the water level, and not only a few centimetres. At Geesthacht is the first watergate, which blocks the effects of the tides.

Man versucht, den Deich und alles was sich dahinter befindet etwas mehr durch Wellenbrecher und einen so genannten Vordeich zu beschützen.

… They are trying to protect the dike and everything behind it better by means of wave breaks and a so called pre-dike.

Einige schöne alte Häuser gab es dort auch.

… There were some beautiful old houses as well.

Wir waren ja in der Nacht zum 1. Mai dort, was in Deutschland ein offizieller Feiertag ist und sehr eifrig begangen wird. Dementsprechend füllte sich am Freitag der Campingplatz mit vielen jungen Leuten, die dann auch Lagerfeuer machten und etwas lauter wurden, aber nicht so, dass ich nicht einschlafen konnte. Der neue Camping-Trend schien ein Aufsatz für das Autodach zu sein, in dem zwei Leute schlafen können, gerne in Kombination mit einem Jeep. Wir waren die einzigen Ausländer auf dem Platz. Das Publikum war ansonsten sehr gemischt, und viele hatten Hunde mit, eigentlich alle sehr gut erzogen.

… We were there during the night to first of May, which is an official holiday in Germany and is marked with enthusiasm. So the site filled up on Friday, also with many young people, who made campfires and were a bit noisy, but not so much that I couldn’t fall asleep. The new camping trend seems to be a contraption that you put on the roof of your car, where two people can sleep, preferable in combination with a jeep. We were the only foreigners on the site. The visitors were very varied, and many had dogs with them, surprisingly well behaving.

Wir haben zwei Ausflüge gemacht, einen nach Lauenburg und einen zum Orchideengarten Karge in Dahlenburg. Von denen berichte ich dann an den kommenden Sonnabenden. Macht’s mal gut, alle zusammen!
