Wirke ein Liebeswerk … Do a work of love

Gesetzt nun, daß es voll und ganz Liebe sei, so ist es doch das Allerbeste nicht. Das wird aus folgendem deutlich: Man soll nämlich von solchem Jubilus [Innigkeit und Andacht und Jubilieren] bisweilen ablassen um eines Besseren aus Liebe willen und um zuweilen ein Liebeswerk zu wirken, wo es dessen nottut, sei’s geistlich oder leiblich. Wie ich auch sonst schon gesagt habe: Wäre der Mensch so in Verzückung, wie’s Sankt Paulus war, und wüßte einen kranken Menschen, der eines Süppleins von ihm bedürfte, ich erachtete es für weit besser, du ließest aus Liebe von der Verzückung ab und dientest dem Bedürftigen in größerer Liebe.

Assuming now that it is entirely and completely love, it is not the very best. This becomes clear from the following: One should in fact abandon such exultation [ardency and devotion and jubilation] from time to time for the sake of something better out of love and to sometimes do a work of love where it is necessary, be it spiritual or physical. As I have also said before: If a person were as ecstatic as Saint Paul was, and if he knew a sick person who needed a soup from him, I thought it would be far better if he let go of ecstasy out of love and served the needy with greater love.
