Bet Williams + John Hodian – Teil 1/Part 1: Bet

Ich habe 2015 schon einmal über sie geschrieben, aber da sie noch existieren, kommt immer mehr Information hinzu. Damals hatte ich auch nur sehr wenige Leser.

Bet Williams und John Hodian sind eine interessante Mischung. Bet hat eine Country-Gruppe, und sie persönlich brilliert mit einer Stimme, die über erstaunlich viele Oktaven spannt. John dagegen kommt mehr aus der klassischen und der jazzigen Richtung. Zusammen wurden sie zu „Epiphany Project“, das alte spirituelle Musik aus aller Welt sammelt und in seinem ganz eigenen Stil wiedergibt. … Also zusätzlich zu ihren eigenen Kompositionen. Und dann arbeitet John noch an der Erhaltung von armenischer Musik. Ihre Konzerte sind natürlich jetzt, wie die aller anderen Musiker, erst einmal bis auf weiteres abgesagt.

… Bet Williams and John Hodian are an interesting combination. Bet has a Country band, and she has a brilliant voice rangeing over many octaves. John on the other hand, was more involved with classic and jazz. Together they became „Epiphany Project“, which collects old spiritual music from all over the world and interprets it in its very own style. In addition to their own compositions, that is. And John is also working with the conservation of Armenian music. Their concerts are for the time being cancelled, just like all other concerts.

Da die beiden so vielseitig sind, ist so viel Material vorhanden, dass ich diesen Bericht in zwei, vielleicht sogar drei Teile teilen werde. Der Artikel wird sonst einfach zu lang. Ich beginne mit Bet Williams, Damen zuerst:

Was Bet sagt:
Als ich dreizehn war und in Virginia lebte, bekam ich meine erste Gitarre. Mit den zwei Akkorden, die ich gerade gelernt hatte, drückte ich meine Finger in ein trauriges Liebeslied (immerhin war ich dreizehn). Viele Akkorde und einige Jahrzehnte später schreibe ich immer noch Songs. Manche traurig, manche lustig, manche ergreifend, konfessionell oder wild. Aber im Laufe der Jahre habe ich festgestellt, dass ich wirklich gerne live spiele.

Ich habe meine College-Jahre damit verbracht, mit Gruppen wie Bookends und Ticapoo Brain zu spielen. Ich habe meine ersten CDs in Nashville mit dem Produzenten Brad Jones (Jill Sobule, Marshall Crenshaw) und Jim Rooney (John Prine, Nanci Griffith) gemacht. Ich war zu schrullig für Nashville, also ging ich die Küste entlang, um in Philadelphia und New York zu spielen, wo ich einige Freunde fürs Leben und eine großartige Musikszene fand. Ich habe die Bühne mit einigen großartigen Musikern geteilt, darunter Lucinda Williams, Bobbie McFerrin, Arlo Guthrie, Taj Mahal, Joan Osborne, John Gorka, Annie Haslam, Herbie Hancock und vielen anderen wunderbaren Menschen.

Ich hatte meine kalifornischen Jahre mit Plattenverträgen, großartigen Schauspielern und großen Versprechungen. Ich habe auf Biobauernhöfen gearbeitet, auf Regenbogenfestivals getanzt und bin gegen Kriege marschiert. Ich hatte meine Jahre in New York City und Woodstock. Seit 2010 schreibe ich mit meinem Mann, dem Komponisten John Hodian und unserem großartigen Sohn Jack das Berliner Kapitel meines Lebens.

Jetzt überlebe ich (spirituell und finanziell), indem ich mit der Bet Williams Band sowie dem New-World-Folk-Ensemble Epiphany Project toure. Von New York über Kalifornien nach Berlin nach Armenien singe ich meinen Lebensunterhalt mit Liedern. Es ist ein interessantes Leben. Ein seltsames, magisches und interessantes Leben.

When I was thirteen, living in Virginia, I got my first guitar. With the two chords I had just learned, I pressed my fingers into a sad love song (after all I was thirteen). Many chords and some decades later I am still writing songs. Some sad, some funny, some poignant, confessional or wild.  But over the years I found that what I really like to do is play live.

I spent my college years playing with groups like Bookends and Ticapoo Brain. I made my first CDs in Nashville with producer Brad Jones (Jill Sobule, Marshall Crenshaw) and Jim Rooney (John Prine, Nanci Griffith). I was too quirky for Nashville so I headed up the coast to play in Philadelphia and New York where I found some lifelong friends and a great music scene. I’ve shared the stage with some great musicians including Lucinda Williams, Bobbie McFerrin, Arlo Guthrie, Taj Mahal, Joan Osborne, John Gorka, Annie Haslam, Herbie Hancock and a bunch of other wonderful people.

I’ve had my California years with record deals, great actors and big promises. I’ve worked on organic farms, danced at Rainbow Festivals, and marched against wars. I’ve had my New York City and Woodstock years. Since 2010 I’ve been creating the Berlin chapter of my life with my husband, composer John Hodian and our amazing son, Jack.

Now I survive (spiritually and financially) by touring with the Bet Williams Band as well as the new-world-folk ensemble Epiphany Project. From New York to California to Berlin to Armenia, I sing songs for a living. It’s an interesting life. A strange, magical, and interesting life.

Zum Abschluss bekommt ihr hier einen kleinen Leckerbissen und eine Vorschau auf Epiphany Project. Bet und John spielen hier zusammen mit ihrem Sohn Jack, der als Teenager auch schon recht virtuos ist, finde ich. Er war übrigens auch mit beim Ostholstein Festival, spielte aber nur in einem Stück mit.
