Dieses Mal wird es ein wenig mehr exotisch. Wir bewegen uns nach Aserbaidschan, nach Baku, wo Aziza Mustafa Zadeh das Licht der Welt erblickte. Ihre Musik ist eine Kombination aus Jazz, Scat-Gesang, Mugam (eine traditionelle Art des Improvisierens aus Aserbaidschan) und ganz viel Aziza.

… This time it is getting a bit more exotic. We proceed to Azerbaijan, to Baku, where Aziza Mustafa Zadeh saw the light of day. Her music is a combination of jazz, scat singing, Mugam (a traditional Azerbaijanian kind of improvising) and a lot of Aziza.

Ein Arbeitskollege machte mich darauf aufmerksam, dass sie in Dunkers Kulturzentrum in Helsingborg spielen würde. Wir machten uns zu viert auf den Weg, mit meinem Mann und noch einer Freundin, und es wurde ein atemberaubender Abend.

Aziza ist eine ziemlich bemerkenswerte Erscheinung. Wenn sie auf der Bühne steht und zum Publikum spricht, wirkt sie eher schüchtern, fast schon als ob sie sich am liebsten irgendwo verstecken möchte. Aber, sobald sie am Klavier sitzt, wird sie zu einer Löwin. Ganz ohne Übertreibung, die Veränderung ist frappierend.

Nach dem Konzert gab sie Autogramme. Unsere Freundin wollte unbedingt mit ihr sprechen. Sie sass auf einem Sofa, eingerahmt von Mama auf der einen und einem Mann auf der anderen Seite. Ich dachte erst das wäre ihr Vater, aber da der sehr früh gestorben ist, wie ich in der Wikipedia las, war das jemand anderes. Sie war jedenfalls sehr gut beschützt. Und natürlich war sie wieder schüchtern.

Aziza Mustafa Zadeh (geboren 19. Dezember 1969 in Baku, Aserbaidschanische SSR) ist eine aserbaidschanische Komponistin, Pianistin und Sängerin, die gelegentlich auch als Princess of Jazz apostrophiert wird. Die von Mustafa Zadeh entwickelte musikalische Stilrichtung ist eine Mischung aus Jazz, Scat-Gesang, Elementen der klassischen Klaviermusik und traditioneller aserbaidschanischer Improvisationsmusik (Mugam).

Aziza Mustafa Zadeh stammt aus einer Musikerfamilie. Ihr Vater, Vaqif Mustafa Zadeh, war Pianist und Komponist und ein führender Vertreter des Mugam Jazz in Aserbaidschan. Er starb überraschend am 16. Dezember 1979 im Alter von 39 Jahren während eines Bühnenauftritts, kurz vor Azizas zehntem Geburtstag. Ihre Mutter, Eliza Mustafa Zadeh, ist eine klassisch ausgebildete Sängerin, die ihren Ehemann auf der Bühne und bei Studioaufnahmen begleitete und heute als Azizas Managerin tätig ist.

… Aziza was born in Baku to musical parents Vagif and Elza Mustafa Zadeh. Vagif was a pianist and composer, famous for creating the mugam-jazz fusion in which his daughter now plays. Elza is a classically trained singer from Georgia. Aziza enjoyed all forms of art, especially dancing, painting and singing. At the age of three, she made her stage debut with her father, improvising vocals. She began studying classical piano at an early age, showing special interest in the works of famous composers Johann Sebastian Bach and Frédéric Chopin. Soon thereafter, she showed a growing talent for improvisation.

Aziza Mustafa Zadeh trat bereits als kleines Kind öffentlich auf und begleitete ihren Vater. Sie erhielt eine klassische musikalische Ausbildung am Konservatorium Baku und nahm klassischen Klavierunterricht. Bereits früh entwickelte sie ein ausgeprägtes Improvisationstalent und eine positive Beziehung zum Jazz.

… On December 16, 1979, Aziza’s father died of a severe heart attack in Tashkent at the age of 39. In order to help her daughter cope with this blow, Aziza’s mother gave up her career as a singer to help nurture her daughter’s own musical talents. In 1988, at the age of 18, Aziza’s mugam-influenced style helped her win third place together with American Matt Cooper in the Thelonious Monk piano competition in Washington, D.C. It was around this time that she moved to Germany with her mother.

Im Alter von 17 Jahren errang Mustafa Zadeh eine Auszeichnung beim Thelonious-Monk-Klavierwettbewerb in Washington, D.C.; 1994 erhielt sie den Preis der deutschen Phonoakademie sowie den Echo Prize von Sony. Ihren Scat-Gesang beschreibt sie als Begleitung zu ihren Jazz-Kompositionen: It’s just another extension of my intensity when I play. It’s characteristic of me. I really don’t know of any Azeri tradition that uses it.

… Aziza released her debut album, Aziza Mustafa Zadeh, in 1991. The album showed influence of Chick Corea and Keith Jarrett, as well as Near Eastern music. Her second album, Always, won her the Phono Academy Prize, a prestigious German music award, and the Echo Prize from Sony. She has since performed in many countries with many jazz and traditional luminaries and released several more albums, the most recent being Generations, released in 2020.

Aziza Mustafa Zadeh lebt seit 1989 in Mainz und tritt in vielen Ländern Europas live auf. Mit Ralf Cetto (Bass) und Simon Zimbardo (Schlagzeug) gründete sie 2008 das Aziza Mustafa Zadeh Trio, mit dem sie seither konzertiert. Das Trio trat 2008 an ihrem Geburtstag in ihrer Heimatstadt Baku zum ersten Mal auf. Es folgten weitere Auftritte in Deutschland und anderen europäischen Ländern, unter anderem beim Jazzfestival Montreux (2009), den Leverkusener Jazztagen (2010), beim Antalya Piano Festival (2009 und 2013) und anderen.

… Aziza currently resides in Mainz, Germany, with her mother, Elza Mustafa Zadeh, who is also her manager. Her two favorite leisure activities, she says, are painting and sleeping. She is a vegetaDaian. She believes in God, though she does not consider herself as belonging to any religion.
