Weibliche Musiker … Female musicians

Heute reisen wir nach Grossbritannien, wo Joan Armatrading ihre Karriere begann. Mein Einstieg zu ihrer Musik war das Lied „Steppin‘ out“, das mich damals total ansprach.

… Today we are traveling to Great Britain, where Joan Armatrading started her career. The first song by her that caught my attention was „Steppin‘ out“, which totally spoke to me then.

Joan Armatrading wurde 1950 in der Stadt Basseterre auf der karibischen Insel Saint Kitts geboren. Ihr Vater war Zimmermann und ihre Mutter Hausfrau. Als sie drei Jahre alt war, zogen ihre Eltern mit ihren beiden ältesten Söhnen nach Birmingham in England und schickten Joan zu ihrer Großmutter auf die karibische Insel Antigua.

… Joan Armatrading was born in 1950 in the town of Basseterre on the Caribbean island of Saint Kitts. Her father was a carpenter and her mother a housewife. When she was three years old, her parents moved with their two eldest boys to Birmingham in England, sending Joan to live with her grandmother on the Caribbean island of Antigua.

Anfang 1958, im Alter von sieben Jahren, schloss sie sich ihren Eltern in Brookfield an, damals ein Stadtteil von Birmingham. Ihr Vater hatte in seiner Jugend in einer Band gespielt. Ungefähr im Alter von 14 Jahren begann Armatrading, ihre eigenen Lieder zu schreiben, indem sie selbst geschriebene Limericks auf einem Klavier vertonte, das ihre Mutter als „Möbelstück“ gekauft hatte. Kurz danach tauschte ihre Mutter ihr in einem Pfandhaus eine billige Gitarre gegen zwei Kinderwagen ein, und sie fing an, sich das Spielen des Instruments selbst beizubringen.

… In early 1958, at the age of seven, she joined her parents in Brookfields, then a district of Birmingham. Her father had played in a band in his youth. At about the age of 14 Armatrading began writing songs by setting her own limericks to music on a piano that her mother had purchased as „a piece of furniture“. Shortly thereafter, her mother got her a cheap guitar from a pawn shop in exchange for two prams, and she began teaching herself the instrument.

Joan Armatrading verließ die Schule im Alter von 15 Jahren, um ihre Familie zu unterstützen. Sie verlor ihren ersten Job (als Schreibkraft und Zeitnehmerin), nachdem sie ihre Gitarre mitgenommen und während der Teepausen auf der Arbeit gespielt hatte.

… Joan Armatrading left school at the age of 15 to support her family. She lost her first job (as a typist and comptometer operator) after taking her guitar to work and playing it during tea-breaks.

Neben Aufnahmen im Studio (19 Alben) tourte Joan Armatrading ausgiebig und trat 1978 in hochkarätigen Konzerten wie „The Picnic at Blackbushe“ (neben Bob Dylan und Eric Clapton) und 1983 in The Prince’s Trust Rock Gala auf. Sie trat zwischen 1975 und 2018 in einem Film und mehrfach  im Fernsehen auf.

… In addition to recording (19 albums), Joan Armatrading has toured extensively and appeared in high-profile concerts such as „The Picnic at Blackbushe“ in 1978 (alongside Bob Dylan and Eric Clapton) and The Prince’s Trust Rock Gala in 1983. She also appeared in a film and numerous times on television between 1975 and 2018.  

Im September 2019 war Joan Armatrading Gegenstand des einstündigen Dokumentarfilms Me Myself I, der auf BBC Four ausgestrahlt wurde und in dem sie ihre Lebensgeschichte sowohl als Songwriterin als auch als Performerin mit Hauptauftritten vieler der Musiker, die sie beeinflusst hat.

… In September 2019 Joan Armatrading was the subject of the one-hour documentary Me Myself I, aired on BBC Four, in which she tells her life story, both as a songwriter and as a performer, with key performances from many of the musicians she has influenced.

Darüber hinaus erhielt sie Ehrentitel von mehreren britischen Universitäten und wurde Kommandeurin des besten Ordens des britischen Empire.

… On top of all this, she received honorary degrees from several British universities and became Commander of the most excellent order of the British Empire.

Ich glaube, man kann behaupten, dass Joan Armatrading eine weitere Lady ist, die total in ihre Musik engagiert ist … 😉 … und mit unaufhaltbarer Energie und Durchsetzungsvermögen. Das brauchte sie wahrscheinlich bereits von Kind auf an, denn sie hatte – wenn ich mich richtig erinnere – fünf Brüder …

… I believe one can claim that Joan Armatrading is another Lady dedicated to her music …  😉 … and with unstoppable energy and assertiveness. Maybe she needed that from early childhood, as – if I remember correctly – she had five brothers …
